Nearly two and a half years after it closed, the movie theater at Carbondale's University Mall is open for business again.

Charleston-based VIP Cinemas, which operates a dozen other theaters primarily in the Midwest, has renovated and reopened the eight-screen theater on the mall's east end. The theater is now called VIP Cinemas Carbondale 8.

The theater formerly operated from 2003 to 2018 under AMC, which closed it. AMC continues to operate the University Place 8 theater in Carbondale.

The first stage of VIP Cinema's opening includes three auditoriums, with renovations scheduled to be completed in the rest of the facility by the end of 2020.

"We're extremely excited to have the opportunity to serve the southern Illinois community with our service and value-centered approach to providing the best movie-going experience," said Jake McSparin, VIP's vice president of theater operations..
