Franklin County owed $1 million in reimbursements
Franklin County is owed more than $1 million in reimbursement payments from two agencies dating back as far as July 1, 2016, and could have trouble making payroll this month.

'There is no plan B' for Franklin County courthouse
Franklin County won't see a new courthouse anytime soon "unless something drastically shifts," one county board member said Wednesday, a day after voters roundly rejected a sales tax hike to replace the county's 140-year-old courthouse.

Perry County tries new election tech today
Perry County will be experimenting with new technology during today's consolidated election, and if it works well, the innovation could make its way to polling places across the county by the end of next year. Perry County Clerk Josh Gross says the precincts voting today at Gardens High-Rise in Pinckneyville will see poll workers using electronic tablets in place of regular poll books in order to check voters' registration and provide them with the correct ballots.

Gothic thriller, 'Dig Two Graves,' shot completely in southern Illinois
Filmmaker Hunter Adams intended to direct his new gothic thriller "Dig Two Graves" in Wisconsin, until he was persuaded to visit southern Illinois. Adams suddenly realized he had stuck a visual gold mine. The film, which opened March 24 at select theaters and on I-Tunes, was shot entirely in the southern counties.

County board approves increase in road district salaries
After meeting with the county's road district commissioners on March 3 to discuss salaries, the county commissioners approved a 2.5 percent salary increase at Friday's board meeting. The salaries are paid for by real estate tax levies and motor fuel tax funds, meaning they do not come from the county's general fund. Board Chairman Ronnie White said real estate tax receipts have been trending slightly upward during the previous year and thus, the commissioners approved the increase.

Governor tours storm-damaged region
ELKVILLE -- With a backdrop of piles of debris and residents cleaning up what's left of heavily damaged homes, Gov. Bruce Rauner visited Elkville on Thursday, his final stop of tornado-torn areas of the state. "There were 16 tornadoes (statewide)," Rauner told assembled media on hard-hit Lacy Road north of downtown Elkville. "Unfortunately, three folks lost their lives."

Former JALC faculty express 'lost confidence' in abilities of board of trustees, President House
CARTERVILLE - The board room at John A. Logan College was packed Tuesday night with dissenting voices, as former faculty members rose to object, once again, to the faculty and staff layoffs a year ago. Gary Caldwell, retired JALC psychology professor, stood and read a letter signed by 13 former and retired faculty members expressing their loss of confidence in the president and the board.

Sheriff's office rallies around co-worker
MARION - Friends, family and co-workers of corrections officer Jason Lewis with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office gathered in the lobby of the office on Friday to hold a BBQ lunch benefit for Lewis. The officer is battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Proceeds from the lunch, provided by Big Blues Que in Creal Springs, went to help offset Lewis's medical expenses. "It's overwhelming, I appreciate it," Lewis said. "I love everything about it, and I appreciate all of the support."
