WEST FRANKFORT -- The season came to an end for the Marion Post 147 Senior American Legion baseball team Thursday with a 4-3 walkoff loss to Christopher in an elimination game of the 25th District postseason tournament at Bill McKee Field.
It was an emotional ending for the older players on Post 147's roster such as Brandon Lynn, Gage Johnson and Jake Griffin.
Lynn started on the mound for Post 147 and got Trenton Stucker to line out but then was lifted after Peyton Overturf doubled. Lynn was a standout pitcher for Marion's high school team in 2016 and was headed to Quincy University before getting sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Lynn's start on Thursday served as a closure sendoff and didn't lead to any team harm as Jake Welch came in to pitch and plunked Trenton Overturf but struck out Hunter Gibbs to end the threat.
Then in the second, Griffin walked and Cory Howard singled and both scored to put Marion ahead 2-0.
Christopher tied the game in the third, however, when Post 147 committed back-to-back throwing errors with two outs.
In the fourth, Peyton Overturf drove in Stucker to give Christopher the lead, which would have grown if not for a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch by Marion center fielder Brendan Soldner to end the inning.
Soldner made another fantastic catch in the fifth inning when he dove forward to snare a ball hit by Gibbs.
Post 147 tied it at 3-3 in the sixth after Aaron Maragni singled and his courtesy runner, Lucas Johnson, scored on a wild pitch. Griffin was also on base and tried to score on the same wild pitch but was thrown out to end the frame.
Lynn hit a two-out single and stole second base in the top of the seventh but was left stranded.
Then in the bottom half, Jacob Breedon drew a leadoff walk from Welch and Trenton Overturf followed with a single to bring up Gibbs.
Overturf stole second and Marion coach Garrett Elders had outfielder Felix Cross play up the middle as an extra infielder but Gibbs, after fouling off several pitches trying to hit a ball to the vacated left side, poked a hit to right field to bring in the winning run.
Christopher was also responsible for Marion's first loss in the postseason this past Tuesday. Post 147 defeated Herrin, 4-1, on Wednesday for the chance to play Christopher again. Orient Post 1961 posted wins over Christopher and Herrin in the bracket.
