CHRISTOPHER -- A game that already figured to be a challenge for winless Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton was made all the more difficult with injuries to several key Bearcats Friday as the Chester Yellow Jackets rolled to a 60-0 Black Diamond Conference win at Spann Field.
Greg Fletcher, one of the most significant offensive threats and a stalwart on defense, was one of the injured players.
"We had seven or eight starters out tonight, so we were using 15 first-year players," said CZR first-year head coach Anthony Hargrove.
The first quarter was a fairly even contest with both teams having opportunities that were lost because of miscues. The Yellow Jackets did manage two scores, the first on a 57-yard pass from junior quarterback Nick Meyer to senior wide receiver Curtis Meyer at the 3:04 mark. The point after by junior Tristin Hobeck was good.
That score was followed at 7:31 by a 68-yard strike from Meyer to senior Calvin Clendenin. The point-after-kick went wide right. The first quarter ended with Chester holding a 13-0 edge.
"You can't give up the big plays," Hargrove said. "They (Chester) had a big return and they had a little slant they caught for 68 yards, so it wasn't like they were nickel and diming us. They got big plays and that was the difference."
After the first period, the game got away from the young Bearcats. The Yellow Jackets added 28 points in the second quarter, six in the third and another 13 in the fourth.
C-Z-R quarterback Bryce Pratt passed for 73 yards, 37 of which were hauled in by junior Frankie Rebolledo on three receptions. The Bearcats were not able to put together a threat on the ground.
Chester had 102 yards rushing on 16 carries. Nick Hefferman led the Yellow Jackets on the ground with 44 yards on his one carry. Clayton Richelman added 40 more on two runs. Nick Meyer passed for 264 yards on 11 completions. Curtis Meyer was his leading target with 134 yards on three catches. Calvin Clendenin added another 111 yards on three receptions.
Next Friday Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton will travel to Hamilton County to take on the winless Foxes. The Bearcats hope to have some of their injured players back.
