Letter to the Editor: Remember when networks cut to commercials during the anthem?

Dear Editor: Thank you, John (Homan), for your thoughtful column ("To stand or not to stand", Sept. 29). I appreciate you taking a "stand" without feeling the need to "go ballistic" on people's opposing opinions.

At different times in my teaching career, I had students who did not stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. I didn't like it and certainly disagreed with them, but guess what? Their right NOT to stand -- my principal and I discovered -- has been upheld at least through the Illinois Supreme Court.

So students sat quietly, and others stood around them -- no voiced opposition from either side, no big deal, and any issue fizzled away.

Despite knowing that they are protected, I would love to take away the microphones, cameras, Facebook, tweets etc. from folks who express such divisive comments and inflame the arguments, especially from the country's "leader."

Let's get back to the "good ol' days" when networks cut away for commercials during the national anthem.

Blessings to you. Have a great week.
