Jack Edward Tisdale, 86, formerly of Benton, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019, at his home in Fredericksburg, Va., with family at his side. He was the son of Helen Marie (Hartman) Tisdale and Paul H. Tisdale of Benton. Jack was born June 20, 1932, in West City.

Jack graduated from Benton High in 1950 and from the University of Illinois in 1954 with a degree in mining engineering. He later earned a master's degree in business from the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the Navy (1955-1956), and his deployment included ports of call in the Mediterranean on the USS Shenandoah. He began his career in the mining industry as a mining engineer with Old Ben Coal Co. and went on to work as a mining inspector and district manager for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. He also held positions as mining supervisor, head of safety and operations manager for coal companies in Pennsylvania, W est Virginia and Kentucky. In 1997, Jack retired from the Mining Safety and Health Administration as a well-respected ventilation and safety expert and then went on to work as a private consultant investigating mine accidents and explosions.

In his youth Jack played football, ran track and was a fine boxer, but his greatest interest was journeying into the woods to hunt and fish. He never outgrew the love for the outdoors. Camping and hiking with his wife and kids and meeting up with his dad, brothers and sons to hunt and fish and telling stories about these adventures were high on his priority list.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Georgia (Adams) Tisdale; his children, Dan Tisdale, Dave Tisdale, Erinn Tisdale and John Tisdale; his grandchildren, Terra (Tisdale) Palmer, Jason Tisdale and Sophie Tisdale; his great-grandchildren, Zach Palmer, David Tisdale, Steven Tisdale and Jaxton Tisdale; his brothers, Fred Tisdale (Cheryl) of Mt. Vernon and Jim Tisdale (Bernice) of Boise, Idaho; several nieces and nephews; and Shirley (Adams) and Barney Beard, sister-in-law and brother-in-Law of Benton. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Paul "Tubby," and sister-in-law Mary (McCann) Tisdale.
