Gloria Jean McRoy, 92, of North Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Murphysboro and Carbondale, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017.

She was born Feb. 1, 1925 in Tipton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Norman W. McRoy, and mother and stepfather, Martha Jane and Lawrence C. Peters of West Liberty, Iowa.

She is survived by her son, Lee (Mary) McRoy of Evansville, Indiana; a daughter, Jean Anne Bersch of Cape Coral, Florida; a brother, Ross (Judy) Peters of West Liberty, Iowa; a dear cousin, Carolyn (Keith) Wood of Tipton, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Bill Daum of Murphysboro; sister-in-law, Mary Ann McRoy of Herrin; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Gloria Jean and Norman raised their family in Murphysboro and Carbondale before moving to St. Charles, Missouri in 1978, finally retiring to Six Lakes Country Club in North Myers, Florida in 1983.

She was a faithful member of the First Baptist churches in Murphysboro, Carbondale, St. Charles, and Riverside Baptist in Fort Myers.

She served her Lord as Sunday school teacher, choir member, librarian and many other capacities.

She also worked as a secretary for the Carbondale school district, as a Welcome Wagon lady and for 15 years in the greeting card department of the North Fort Myers Walmart.

The family wishes to thank her dear friends in the Prime Time Sunday school Bible Study Class at Riverside Baptist and the staffs at Cape Coral Hospital, Health Park Rehab, Palm View Assisted Living at Gulf Coast Village and Hope Hospice for their many kindnesses and gentle care.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 at the Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home. Visitation will be from Noon until the hour of service.

Inurnment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, weather permitting.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
