BENTON -- George Alan Weed, 81, passed away at 8:07 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Benton.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in Fires of Revival Chapel in Benton with the Rev. Dean Severin officiating. Burial will be in Lindale Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Eldorado. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.

Alan was born Feb. 23, 1936, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of George and Challis (Johnson) Weed. He married the former Alice Riegel on March 24, 1981, and she survives.

He and Alice attended Fires of Revival Chapel in Benton.

Mr. Weed left a teaching position at Purdue University to become the human resources director for Freeman United Coal Company. He continued his interests in coal exploration and development up to the present time.

Alan enjoyed fishing, music, gardening, humor and family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Alice R. Weed of Benton; children, Elizabeth Cano and husband Angel of Avon, Indiana, George Alan Weed Jr. and wife Jodi of Hernando, Mississippi, Debra Weed of Avon, Indiana, Lowell Riegel and wife Debbie of Benton and Gary Riegel and wife Irma of Oakland; grandchildren, Rachel Edwards and husband Daniel of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Adam Weed and wife Lauren of Richmond, Virginia, Jacob Weed of Hernando, Mississippi, Matthew Mugumya and Sarah Mugumya, both of Avon, Indiana, David Riegel of Los Angeles, Daniel Riegel and wife Lailah of Galatia and Dr, Brant Riegel and wife Dr. Daniela of Champaign; two great-grandchildren, Isabela and Trent; brother-in-law, Everett Stanley of Plainfield, Indiana; two nephews; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Stanley; and a nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fires of Revival Chapel and will be accepted at the funeral services and visitation.

Leffler Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.
