Gerald "Hammer" K. Mahan of Harrisburg

HARRISBURG -- Gerald "Hammer" K. Mahan, 73, died at 9:29 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the funeral home.

He was born March 24, 1944, in Evansville, Indiana, to Roby and Hazel (Davenport) Mahan. He married the former Joann Patton on June 24, 1972, and she survives.

Mr. Mahan worked for Sahara Coal Company for 42 years before it closed. He then worked for the city of Harrisburg, serving as superintendent of public property until his retirement in 2013.

He served as a past president of Progressive Mine Workers of America and was a former member of Harrisburg Elks Lodge. He also served as a past Exalted Ruler of Harrisburg Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Joann Mahan of Harrisburg; daughter, Ashley (Justin) Roper of Harrisburg; grandson, Jaxton Roper of Harrisburg; three sisters, Linda (Gary) Crawford of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sandra (Rick) Prather of Equality and Cynthia Mahan of Equality; brother, Jeff Mahan of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Roger Mahan.

Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills is in charge of arrangements.
