John William Fitzgerald, 83, of Creal Springs died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at noon at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Visitation will be held Wednesday after 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.

John was born Sept. 21, 1939, in Harrisburg to the late Mitto and Grace (Holmes) Fitzgerald.

He married the former Madge Tanner on Sept. 28, 1961, and she survives.

John worked many jobs, including abatement work, coal mining and bartending at the Carrier Mills American Legion for many years.

He was a member by faith at the North America Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Madge Fitzgerald of Creal Springs; six children, Debbie Clark of Carmi, David (Kris) Holmes of Carrier Mills, Quentin Fitzgerald of Hillsboro, Kelly (David) Mitchell of Galatia, Angie (David) Kyle of Carrier Mills and Robbie (Jimmy) Sherrod of Creal Springs; 10 grandchildren, Kristie (Kyle) Nernberger, Andrea (Marvin) Thompson, Samantha (Billy) Mayes, Randy (Erica) Winters, Jonathon Holmes of Carmi, Timmy (Jeanette) Couty, Kristin (Logan) Warren, Julia (Shad) Mattingly, Dylan Kyle and Benjamin Mitchell; 16 grandchildren; brother Leon Fitzgerald of Harrisburg; and sister Phyllis Murphy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, George Fitzgerald, Floyd Fitzgerald, Clarence Fitzgerald and Harvey Fitzgerald; and three sisters, Leona Hyers, Frances King and Mamie McAnally.
