Veterans Day events to attend

SALINE COUNTY -- Veterans will be recognized for their service at several area ceremonies during the course of Veterans Day weekend.

Friday

• Carrier Mills-Stonefort Grade School will have a veterans program at 9 a.m.

• Southeastern Illinois College will have its Veterans Recognition Program at 12:30 p.m. at the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Centre. Veteran Josh Richardson of Carrier Mills is the featured speaker.

Sunday

• Southeastern Illinois College's Community Chorus will host a Veterans Day concert 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. The program, "A Century of Remembrance" will be at the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Centre.

• Village of Galatia Veterans Recognition Ceremony will be at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial on West Main Street.

Monday

• Flag ceremony at 10 a.m. at Harrisburg Walmart

• Veterans Recognition Program at 11 a.m. at Harrisburg American Legion.

• Eldorado Veterans Day Program: 10:45 a.m. veterans will gather at Watson Funeral Home on Locust Street and march to Old City Hall. Emcee Jerry Cain will welcome those to the ceremony.

The Rev. Russell Helton, pastor of College Heights Baptist Church, will give the invocation, followed by the raising of the U.S. flag by Larry Durfee. Robin Johnston will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner," followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

There will be a placing of memorial wreaths by American Legion Post 169, VFW Post 3479, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 169, VFW Auxiliary Unit 3479, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 169 and Shawnee Forest Chapter NSDAR.

A joint honor guard will give a 21-gun salute followed by "Taps."

U.S. Navy Capt. David Otten will deliver the Veterans Day address. Rev. Helton then will give the benediction followed by dinner at the American Legion Hall, 908 4th St.

In case of bad weather, the program will be held indoors at the Legion.
