Steeleville Legion falls in division tournament

Steeleville American Senior Legion baseball took on Newton in round one of the 5th Division tournament in Aviston.

Newton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk, a double, two more walks and a base hit. Steeleville tied the game in the third with Owen Gross drawing a walk, reaching second on a passed ball and scoring on a single from Ryan Vogt.

Newton regained the lead in the 5th on a walk and two base hits. Steeleville would not go away easy as they forced extra innings notching the tying run in the seventh. Gross reached on an error and scored on a hit from Bradley Mevert. Newton got the 3-2 win in the ninth on two walks and a two out base hit.

Gross worked six innings on the mound, giving up six hits, two runs on four walks with six strike outs. AJ Stearns pitched the final 2 2/3 innings allowing two hits, walking two, striking out 3 and giving up one run. Vogt and Mevert each went 2 for 5 with one RBI. Jacob Sutton also went 2 for 5. Mel Mulholland was 2 for 4 and Dusty Sutton went 1 for 4 for Steeleville.

July 22: Carmi 2, Steeleville 0

Steeleville took on Carmi in an elimination match up in the 5th Division tournament in Avistion. Scoreless through three innings, Carmi got on the board with one in the fourth and took a 2-0 lead with another run in the fifth inning. Steeleville had five hits in the game but could not break through against the tough Carmi team. Carmi moved on with a 2-0 win.

Jacob Sutton lead Steeleville going 2 for 3. Dusty Sutton, Ryan Vogt and Jordan Wilson each had one hit. Vogt pitched six innings of three hit ball, walking one, striking out five and allowing one earned run.

Steeleville finished the season 14-4.
