A Sesser man is dead after a semi hit him Sunday evening on Interstate 57 while he apparently was standing in the center of the road.
The Illinois State Police report that David J. Gayton, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which took place around 7:48 p.m. March 4 at northbound milepost 96 in Jefferson County.
The driver of the truck tractor semi-trailer, 41-year-old Christopher A. Stafford of Shepherdsville, Ky., was not injured. Stafford was unable to slow his truck in time to avoid hitting Gayton, according to Trooper Joshua Haile, and is not being charged.
"At this point we do not know why [Gayton] was in the middle of the roadway," Haile said, adding that there was no broken-down vehicle in the vicinity belonging to Gayton. "At this point we have nothing to say he did, or did not do this with intent."
