Maya Benyas, a freshman at Carbondale Community High School, has been selected as one of five finalists for the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Overture Competition Competition.
The contest was open to composers of any age within 200 miles of Champaign.
Benyas's piece will get an orchestral reading by the CU Symphony on March 3 and will be introduced to the audience along with the other four finalists at the orchestral concert at Krannert Center the night before.
If her composition is one of the two winners selected at the reading session, she will receive a cash prize and a performance with the orchestra next season.
