A new monument sitting at the edge of Du Quoin marks one congregation's current devotion to its faith, but another of its aims is to send a message about that faith across the generations.

Pastor Gary Darnell of Spirit of Life Christian Church says his congregation will hold a dedication ceremony this Sunday, Oct. 22 for the 25-foot-tall cross that has been constructed in front of the church and near Rt. 51.

The dedication will take place at the 10 a.m. worship service and will be followed by a prayer around the cross. A dedication dinner will follow the ceremonies. The public is invited to attend.

"It's probably going to be a busy Sunday," Darnell says with a laugh.

Darnell says discussions about erecting a large cross in front of the church began about a year and a half ago. The completed cross, inspired in part by the large cross visible from Interstate 57 in Effingham, is made of an aluminum-steel alloy and is set in 8 feet of concrete. The project was finished in late August.

Darnell says it was important to the church to set the cross as near to Rt. 51 as possible in order to display a show of faith to those passing through the city.

He says the church hopes to see the cross stand for at least a century as a monument to the faith of today's residents, and as a message to those who will inhabit the city tomorrow.

"I think it's just beautiful," Darnell says. "We put it there with the intention of our grandchildren knowing we worshiped here."
