Riverboat passengers could provide boon to Chester businesses

To the editor (an open letter to the Chester business community): Please join us to learn about the visiting riverboats and how your business and our community can benefit from their passengers becoming our guests. The visiting riverboats and their guests have been increasing in numbers and we would like to discuss ideas and strategies to not only improve their experience but to increase their spending while they are here and keep them coming to our lovely little town.

Don Welge, president of Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. in Chester, says if Illinois is going to enact a minimum wage increase, it needs to take into account the varying affects that will have on different regions of the state.

Letter to the editor: Time will come when there are no refs left to abuse

To the editor: I enjoyed reading your column ("Too many adults behaving badly at kids' games," Jan. 30, by John Homan) on fan behavior at sporting events. I have been an IHSA-licensed official for 28 years. Some people might say not a very good one, but just like all my officiating buddies, I always do my best and make it my goal to be fair, be in position, and get the call right.

Florida family thankful for Marion

To the editor: We are snowbirds, traveling from Minnesota to Florida each year. Several weeks ago, we were planning to stay in Marion overnight at a local motel. Instead, I suffered a heart emergency. Your town was incredible!

Letter: President Dunn deserves Carbondale's forgiveness

To the editor: As an alumnus of Southern Illinois University of Carbondale and a former member of the Illinois Board of higher Education as well as the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees, I want to take a moment and share what has become an outside perspective on the ongoing leadership struggle on the Carbondale campus as well as the system itself. As many of the readers do, I share in a love for SIU. The last few years have been tough for southern Illinois. The comments made by President Dunn were not what we expected of him. It goes without saying that we can all make a mistake or two, I know I have. I believe his apology is sufficient given the fact that folks in Carbondale were in fact reactively complaining, a right they have. I don't view the email obtained through a FOIA, as an attempt to sidestep Carbondale, but simply a reference to a model that former administrators could acknowledge.

Letter: Carbondale Park District's request warrants further scrutiny

To the editor: The Carbondale Park District has recently asked the city to assume responsibility for a number of our parks. Responsibility for the natural areas is reflected in the CPD's mission to "enrich the quality of community life through the diversity of leisure pursuits and to heighten appreciation of our natural world." In spite of publicly voiced concerns about the fiscal responsibility of the Splash Park, now the CPD treasurer states that financial challenges make changes necessary (Feb. 28, Carbondale Times).
