Poets in motion: Students from Chester dominate SWIC contest

Book Notes: Secret lives of teenage girls

American girls ages 13 to 19 live in two worlds, the real and the virtual. They interact with both worlds simultaneously -- though the more absorbing of their worlds is the virtual one they hold in their hands. They spend between nine and 11 hours on their phones using apps like Facebook, Yik Yak, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. They send scores, sometimes hundreds, of texts each day. They stage, take and post selfies and monitor the "likes" to measure their popularity and, even, their self worth. Once major consumers of books, girls now read far less. "For most American girls, social media is where they live," writes author Nancy Jo Sales. Teenage girls are the number one users of social media and many, if not most, are extremely ambivalent.

Seth Grahame-Smith's Jane Austen-zombie mash-up makes it to the screen

When Seth Grahame-Smith came up with the idea for a mash-up of Jane Austen's most popular book and a tale of today's probably equally popular armies of the undead -- resulting in the 2009 novel "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" -- he had no idea that it would be such a huge success. He went on to have another hit with another genre novel, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," and though that book's film adaptation fizzled at the box office, the new film of "PPZ" has some very strong buzz going. Grahame-Smith spoke about the book recently in West Hollywood. Q: Were you a fan of the Jane Austen novel? A: No. when I was 14, and I had to read it for English lit, it turned out that high school freshman me didn't really care too much about whether Lizzy married the right guy or not. It was kind of an impenetrable book for me. But when this idea came around, when I was around 32, I went back and read it again, and the first thing I realized was that Jane Austen was really funny, that she was making fun of these people. It was like this aha moment of not being an idiotic 14-year old anymore. Then I read "Sense and Sensibility" and "Northanger Abbey," and everything else. The fun of it and the scary thing about it was trying to get the language right, trying to make these passages [between her book and mine] invisible. The proudest I can ever be is when someone says I didn't realize where your stuff starts and where her stuff ends. Q: When your book came out, was there any blowback from ardent Austen fans? A: When the book took off, I had a moment of uh-oh. Because at that time I didn't know anything about the so-called Jane-ites, and I thought, now they're going to come after me. But while a couple of them here and there sort of dismiss it out of hand as sacrilege, to my relief and surprise, I've found over the years that Jane-ites are a tremendously humorous group of people. I would say at least 90 percent of the Jane-ites that I encounter say that I let them experience their favorite book in a new way, and that I didn't change the characterizations or the prides and prejudices, but that I took them and put them in an absurd context, and preserved the characterizations. Q: So where did the idea of adding zombies come from? A: The thing that was the funniest to me throughout her book was the fact that these people, these Regency era English aristocrats, were so stuck up and so concerned with their pettiness, that they would actually care about marrying up and about who wore the best dress and about who had the best hair, when their country was falling apart around them. All I did was take these brilliant characterizations that Jane Austen had created -- these prides and these prejudices -- and turned them up to 11. Instead of sparring with words, Darcy and Liz spar with swords. And I thought it was funny that these people were still fighting about who was richer when you couldn't go from here to there without getting attacked by a horde of the undead. The whole thing was ridiculous, but I knew instinctively that whatever I did, I could not ever wink at the reader. I had to approach this with dead seriousness. And the thing that was the most gratifying about the movie was that they never flinch; it's cast and shot like BBC's "Masterpiece." It's just an updated "Pride and Prejudice" … and, oh, by the way, there's zombies in it. "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" is now in theaters.
