'Ride the Cyclone' starts SIU's School of Theater and Dance stage season

The carnival deaths of six teenagers -- and their subsequent efforts to be the one chosen to come back to life -- hits Southern Illinois University Carbondale's McLeod Theater stage Oct. 12 to 15 as the School of Theater and Dance opens its 2023-2024 season with the dark comic musical "Ride the Cyclone." The season presents "opportunities for people to see shows that are not often produced," said H.D. Motyl, director in the School of Theater and Dance.  "All four of these shows are performances that have not played in this area ever, or for a very long time. It's fun for us to give audiences something that is fresh."

SIU dedicates portrait by artist Herbert Fink of 'education senator'

John G. Gilbert worked as the "education senator" alongside his close friend SIU President Delyte W. Morris in helping transform Southern Illinois University Carbondale from a small teachers college to a major university in the 1960s and 1970s. Now, a lithograph of Gilbert by renowned artist Herbert Fink is directly across from a photograph of Morris and his wife, Dorothy, at the entrance of Morris Library's browsing room after an unveiling today (Sept. 29).

Salukis off to best start since 2007 after beating Missouri State, 33-20

Southern Illinois is 4-0 and off to its best start since 2007 after beating Missouri State on Saturday, 33-20, in front 10,359 fans at Saluki Stadium on Family Weekend. The Salukis jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never trailed in the contest with the Bears (1-3, 0-1). On the third play from scrimmage, running back Romeir Elliott galloped 64 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown, and he added a five-yard TD run midway through the first quarter. Elliott totaled 102 yards on nine carries, but left the game before halftime with a turf toe injury.

Vicky Joyce (Hale) Leonberger

Vicky Joyce (Hale) Leonberger passed peacefully from this life at 12:25 p.m. Sept. 25, 2023, surrounded by her family. Vicky was born Feb. 23, 1949, to James and Laverne (Weatherington) Hale. On Sept. 25, 1965, she married Arlie W. "PeeWee" Leonberger. From that union was born their son, Steven W. Leonberger.

Verna R. Spivey, 96, of Rosiclare passed away Sept. 26, 2023, at Hardin County General Hospital. She attended First Christian Church of Rosiclare.

Council hears more on Oasis sports complex

Plans for a sports complex in the former Illinois Centre Mall area were further outlined Sept. 25 by the Marion City Council and developer Rodney Cabaness. Having moved into the new city hall at 350 Tower Square that very day, Mayor Mike Absher sought to put the spurs to more historic moves with the opening of a sports complex that would cater to traveling youth athletics teams.

'Jazz Under the Stars' brings in more than $10K for SIC

Jazz was in the air at the second annual Jazz Under the Stars Sept. 23 at Southeastern Illinois College. The fundraiser was held at the Ella Elizabeth Hise Museum of Regional Art and Terrace to raise money for the SIC Foundation endowment, which funds student scholarships and support. Around 80 people attended, and the event grossed over $10,000 for student scholarships and support. Additionally, every dollar raised will be doubled by a federal Title III grant, making the total proceeds from the event even larger.

Marty Miller Maddox, formerly of Harrisburg

Marty Miller Maddox, 69, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Harrisburg, entered into the God's Kingdom on Aug. 28, 2023. He passed away peacefully in the Cardiovascular Care Unit at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital with Cheryl, his wife of 35 years, by his side. Marty was the youngest of three children born to parents Lindell and Katherine Maddox. The family moved to Harrisburg when Marty was a young boy. At age 13, Marty was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Harrisburg. He actively participated in church life and as an older teen, took seminary extension courses through the church.

William Robert Upchurch, formerly of Harrisburg

William Robert Upchurch, 80, of Raymore, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at the Kansas City Hospice House. Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, MO 64083. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m.
