Bulldogs go low to start season

HARRISBURG -- The Harrisburg boys and girls' golf team kicked off the 2021 season on the right foot as both squads picked up a triangular win over Johnston City and Zeigler-Royalton Friday at Shawnee Hills Country Club.
The Bulldog boys carded a 167, finishing 37 shots ahead of second place finisher Z-R (204) and Johnston City 253.
Grant Wilson and Brett Lawrence took home co-medalist honors in their first match of the season, as both shot a 40, while Harrisburg got a 43 from Ashton Hall and a 44 from Haden Emery.
The Bulldogs also received a 45 from Evan McDermott and a 54 from Ethan Golish.
Chase McReynolds paced Johnston City with a 57, while Gunner Hawkins led Z-R with a 45.
Harrisburg returns to action (today) Tuesday when they host Massac County and Mt. Carmel in a triangular, beginning at 4 p.m.
Nicholes leads way for girls
Much like the boys' squad, the Harrisburg girls won its triangular match and did so by edging out Zeigler-Royalton by one stroke.
Led by Frankie Leigh Nicholes' 36, Harrisburg shot a 177, beating out Zeigler-Royalton (177) and Johnston City (236).
Nicholes took medalist honors and was helped in team scoring by Madison McClusky's 39. Gracie Behnke shot a 45 for the Bulldogs, while Hannah Jones carded a 57. Jaci Robinson added a 61.
The Bulldog girls will tee it up again Thursday when they travel to Carmi-White County.
