MARION - A pair of second half rallies fell just short for the Marion girls' basketball team as the Wildcats lost to 53-47 in overtime to Massac County Tuesday night and fell 39-37 to Centralia on Monday night.
In the OT loss Tuesday, Marion trailed 24-16 at halftime and outscored the Patriots 27-19 in the second half to force overtime with both clubs knotted at 43. In the extra period, Massac County outscored Marion 10-4.
Jerzy Bittle had a co-game-high 21 points for the Wildcats, while Alexis Hutchcraft finished in double figures with 13 points.
Maegan Dillon finished with five points, while Payton Strobel tossed in three points, while Gracie Connor and Kristen Kadela each tacked on two points. Zoey Danner had a second quarter free throw for one point.
Centralia 39, Marion 37
Marion made a strong rally, outscoring Centralia 28-13 in the second half before falling 39-37 Monday.
The Wildcats were led by a game-high 23 points from Jerzy Bittle, while Maegan Dillon finished with five points.
Kristen Kadela flushed down four points, while Gracie Connor tacked on three points and Kaitlyn Reuss tossed in two points.
Just three players scored for Centralia as J. Rudder-Williams had a 21 points, while K. Edson tacked on 10 points and N. Edson added eight for the Annies.
Marion trailed 18-6 after the first quarter and limped into the locker room down 26-9, but the Wildcats mounted a fierce rally, outscoring Centralia 14-5 in the third quarter to pull to within eight at 31-23 and in the final eight minutes, the Wildcats went on a 14-8 run before falling by two.
Marion was at Mt. Vernon on Thursday, followed by a return game at Centralia Saturday.
