Carterville's Thompson named to AP All-State First Team

For the second straight season, Carterville's Jeniah Thompson is a Associated Press First Team All-Stater.
On Thursday, the Lions' senior joined four others and garnered the second most votes, grabbing 87.
Thompson, who will play collegiately at nearby Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, was a Class 3A First Team Associated Press player last year and was named to the Second Team of Class 3A IBCA Team.
Thompson has been named to the Southern Illinois River-To-River Conference for all four years, as well as, All-South for four years. She was last year's Player of The Year in southern Illinois.
To date, Thompson has scored 1,600 points and has shot 53% from the field and 34% from 3-point range. She is a 71% shooter from the free throw line, while averaging 14.3 ppg, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Carterville (31-2) beat Teutopolis for the school's first super-sectional and is playing Chicago Marshall in the first round of the IHSA State Tournament.
Thompson's running mate Abbey Crain was also named to the AP 2A All-State Team, making the Honorable Mention Team.
Crain, a JALC softball signee, was named Honorable Mention to last year's AP All-State 3A Team and was Third Team IBCA 3A a season ago. In addition, Crain was All-Conference and All-South the last three years and will be playing softball at John A. Logan Junior College.
Crain joined Thompson as a 1,000 point scorer at Carterville is shooting 58% from the field, 32% from 3-point range and 79% from the free throw line. She averages 13.2 ppg, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists.
Also on the Honorable Mention 2A Team was Harrisburg's Lydia Miller and Benton's Ensley Tedeschi.
"Miller averages a double-double for a Harrisburg basketball team that was ranked in the Top 10 in 2A all season and played in their 8th straight regional championship. Miller is averaging 14 ppg and 10 rpg. She was all-tournament at the Harrisburg Invitational, the Benton Christmas Tournament and the Eldorado Mid-Winter Tournament.
Miller is also one of the top students in her class and has many schools to choose from. She recently got 1st place at her ACES regional in Biology and English.
Tedeschi averaged a team-leading totals of 10.3 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists as a freshman.
In Class 1A, Goreville's Payton Sopczak made the AP Honorable Mention All-State Team.
