Carbondale put an exclamation point to cap off its regular season as the Terriers trounced Harrisburg 62-7 Friday night as they finished the season 8-1 and will now host Mascoutah in the first of the IHSA Class 5A Playoffs.
Harrisburg, who was held to 149 yards of total offense and shut out on the scoreboard for three quarters Friday night, closes out an 0-9 campaign, a first for the Bulldogs since 1973.
Carbondale scored its first five touchdowns on just six plays from scrimmage Friday at Bleyer Field as the Terriers took a 42-0 lead after one and led 56-0 at halftime.
Aside from taking more than an hour to play one quarter, Carbondale amassed 244 rushing yards on just 11 carries and accounted for 69 yards through the air and Darius Ragland was nearly perfect, throwing 4-for-5 and had a rushing and passing touchdown.
Gabe Hillard had a hat trick for Carbondale, scoring three first half touchdowns, while Cameron McKinney had both of the Terriers TDs in the second quarter.
Harrisburg's lone touchdown of the game came with five seconds left in the third quarter when Issac Crabb hooked up with Jacon Penrod from 27 yards out.
Crabb was 8-for-26 with four interceptions and 88 yards in the air. Tysen Satterfield led the rushing attack with 43 yards on eight carries, while Dylan Henshaw had 14 yards on three carries and Bryant Lester had six carries for 13 yards.
Harrisburg head coach Gabe Angelly recounted a time where Carbondale and Bryan Lee suffered an 0-9 season (2015) but found a way to turn the program around. Angelly is hoping for the same kind of result.
"We knew (Carbondale) was a good team and unfortunately we haven't had the defense that we are accustomed to having in the past. Carbondale is good, they are talented and its a tough way to end the year.
"Coach Lee has built the program back up," Angelly said. "There was a time when he was 0-9 and so I can only hope that we can get the program turned back around, back to where Harrisburg football is used to being."
