CHRISTOPHER -- The Du Quoin High School girls basketball team couldn't quite escape an early deficit and ultimately lost 54-48 at Christopher on Tuesday night.
The Lady Indians, who fell to 5-7 with the loss, beat Christopher on the final night of the Du Quoin Lady Indian Tip-Off Classic in the first week of the season.
In the rematch, Christopher jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter. Du Quoin's only field goal in the first eight minutes was a 3-pointer by Chloe Hill.
Hill hit another trey and Bailey Harsy went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the second quarter but the Lady Bearcats extended their lead to 31-19 at the halftime break.
Katie Smith had a huge third quarter for Du Quoin with all but one of her 12 points in the frame to help knock down the margin. Then in the fourth, the Lady Indians pulled within a point with a minute to play, but couldn't get the lead.
Harsy led the Lady Indians with 13 points, followed by Smith's dozen. Hill had three triples for nine and both Delaynie Dearmond and Ayanna Dunklin chipped in six.
While most holiday tournaments start next Thursday, the Du Quoin girls get a jump start with a game against the hosts of the Lebanon tourney on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 8 p.m., with action resuming Thursday morning at 11 a.m. for the loser of that game.
