Authorities still aren't saying what caused last week's surprising death of Terri Henry, the wife of the mayor of Carbondale, but the circumstances remain the subject of an active state police investigation.
Mayor John "Mike" Henry returned home Aug. 9, sometime after that evening's city council meeting, to find his wife dead inside their residence, according to the initial news release from the Illinois State Police. Terri Henry, 66, was a well-known local real estate agent, most recently at Remax Integrity in Marion.
The Illinois State Police and Jackson County Coroner's Office scheduled an autopsy for last Friday, Aug. 12. On Tuesday, ISP Trooper Jayme Bufford said details of the autopsy aren't being released at this time. Attempts by the Times to reach Jackson County Coroner Thomas Kupferer were not successful.
"The investigation remains active and ongoing," Bufford said. "In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, no information is available at this time."
On Friday, the same day as the scheduled autopsy, Mayor Henry announced he would take a leave of absence from his duties with the city "until further notice." In turn, Councilwoman Carolin Harvey has assumed the role of Carbondale mayor pro tempore. Harvey has assumed Mayor Henry's responsibilities in the past, notably during a three-week leave of absence he took in 2018.
"My heart has been filled with indescribable sadness since the sudden loss of my wife, Terri," Mayor Henry said in a statement the city released last Friday. "While our families mourn and process this unspeakable tragedy, we request privacy as we make arrangements and thank you for your condolences."
According to the state police, Henry returned home on Aug. 9, discovered his deceased wife and notified the Carbondale Police Department, which responded to the scene. Jackson County Ambulance Service paramedics also responded. Carbondale police requested that the state police take over the investigation.
The investigation remains under the authority of the Jackson County Coroner's Office and ISP Crime Scene Services, according to state police. Once their work is completed, the case will be turned over to the Jackson County State's Attorney's Office for review.
A memorial service for Terri Henry will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 20 at First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main St. in Carbondale. Meredith Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
