Larry Wyskiel spends his Friday nights during the winter months in a room with a half dozen women.

And his wife Jackie even knows about it. In fact, she's one of them.

Turns out the Benton man wouldn't have it any other way, as he says he enjoys being "The head cook!" for the Benton American Legion Post 280/Veteran's of Foreign Wars' Friday night fish, shrimp and chicken meals. He and the half dozen ladies serve up meals to the hungry customers who line up for the $10 plates that also include a baked potato, slaw, baked beans and hush puppies.

Legion Auxiliary member Freida Broadway said they are usually quite busy for the two hours from 5 to 7 p.m. "We've done really well despite the pandemic because we have curbside pickup."

In addition to the options of chicken and shrimp plates, customers have their choice of codfish or catfish.

Guests do not have to be members of the Legion/VFW Post to purchase the Friday night specials and may call their orders in to 618-438-0861 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The VFW Post is located at 311 S. Main St. in Benton.
