MARION -- A new traffic signal is coming to the intersection of West Main and North Fifth Street, following unanimous approval by the Marion City Council on Monday night.

Brian Zeigler of Clarida and Zeigler Engineering said the project would improve access and safety for a number of businesses in the area.

The council also approved an agreement with Chastain and Associates for the design of the Tower Square improvement project.

Mayor Mike Absher said that agreement entails the part of the improvements not being covered by grant funding. He said the plans include the addition of a fountain and pergolas to provide shading for performances and events. An ice rink is also in the plans.

Sticking to Tower Square, the council approved a loan agreement with First Southern Bank to refurbish the bank's building at 300 Tower Square.

Absher said the deal gives the city a line of credit to draw upon as it refurbishes the bank for city hall purposes.

In other economic development matters, the council approved the following:
• The sixth amendment to the Marion Heights tax-increment financing district, removing one parcel.
• The fourth amendment to the Marion Heights II TIF District, removing one parcel.
• The sale of property within the Robert L. Butler Industrial Park.
