HARRISBURG -- Students at Harrisburg's two grade schools got a summer send-off Tuesday afternoon from their former teachers.

Teachers, administrators and staff gathered in front of both West Side Primary and East Side Intermediate schools as students were driven past, waving.

Some students stood through open sunroofs.

Teachers, many of whom made signs, practiced social distancing as they gave their students shouts and cheers.

Student parades have become a popular way to celebrate the end of the school year in the current reality of living during a pandemic.

A parade for high school seniors, following Harrisburg's Homecoming parade route, will be at 6 p.m. today.

Earlier in the week, Harrisburg Superintendent Mike Gauch assured students and parents that the Unit 3 school district will have some sort of graduation for the Class of 2020.

Such a ceremony, with a date to be determined, will likely involve vehicles with graduates parked in a drive-in movie fashion and will follow any Illinois State Board of Education guidelines, Gauch said.
