Charles E. Gaines, 87, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Charles had been a laborer at Old Ben #26 coal mine at Sesser. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin.

Charles was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion. Charles was also a member of the UMWA.

He was born May 7, 1932 at Morehouse, Missouri, the son of Charles M. and Florence (McGehee) Gaines.

He married Nina Doris Hosick on Dec. 10, 1955 at Springerton, Illinois and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; five children, Doris (Cliff) Gregory of Du Quoin, Debbie (Greg) Heck of Du Quoin, Charles (Monica) Gaines Jr. of Du Quoin, Mike (Sherry) Gaines of Tamaroa, and Craig (Jamie) Gaines of Du Quoin; two sisters, Wilma Reever of Fairfield and Eloise Gaines of Carmi; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Chester Gaines; and one sister, Doris Gaines.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with the Rev. Joe Wagner officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.

Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
