The United Way of Southern Illinois will play host to a first-of-its-kind fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Jeremy "Boo" Rochman Memorial Park, better known as "Castle Park," on Giant City Road just south of Carbondale.

The event, entitled "Champion Challenge," will give attendees the chance to battle members of SIU's Medieval Combat Club for prizes using foam swords and medieval-style armor.

Attendance is free, and attendees who wish to participate in a battle may pay $10 to battle a Champion or $20 to battle one another. Children ages 12 and younger will be allowed to challenge a Champion to a mini-battle for free.

Toni Hayden, executive director for The United Way of Southern Illinois, said she is excited to be hosting a unique event like this.

"There's nothing like it here in southern Illinois," Hayden said. "It's going to be something new that hopefully we can grow upon over the next few years."

Kayla Chamness, SIU Medieval Combat Club's president, says the event is a unique opportunity for the club to showcase its commitment to community.

"I think the most exciting part about helping out with the event is how well it embodies an internal core part of Belegarth, which is improvement within the community, so it's nice to show people who aren't involved that this club is more than just the fighting aspect," she said.

Chamness said participants will be monitored closely to ensure participants have a safe and fun experience.

"Attendees should know that safety is always our priority, so if the marshal, our refs, feel something is unsafe, they'll stop it," she said.

All money raised will go to support The United Way of Southern Illinois, a charitable giving and resource organization which serves agencies in 13 southern Illinois counties, including Jackson County.
