The Pinckneyville City Council will study a request by Patty Robertson for a stop sign at Mason and Kaskaskia streets, commissioners agreed this week. The Pinckneyville Police Department will count the traffic at the intersection, and will report back to the council.

The police department requested and received permission to buy six in-car computers for the city's squad cars. The city will pay the cost, $21,480, and expects to be reimbursed by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The council approved Sam Robb's request to close Mulberry Street between Walnut Street and Perry Street (which is also the alley behind the Eagles) for a BBQ competition on Saturday, Sept. 8. The road will be closed between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m., and the competition will consist of pork steak, ribs, and pulled pork. Younger cooks will compete in the field of porkburgers. Prizes will be awarded.

New firefighters

Three new firefighters have been hired for the city fire department -- Nicholas Bauersachs, Jamie Driskell and Caleb Howard. According to the council, they will be on probation for one year, while they receive in-house training.

After the one-year probation, they will attend the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute Basic Firefighter Academy for further training.

Meanwhile, the fire department also received approval to operate a food stand to sell steamed sweet corn during the American Thresherman Association's August event at the fairgrounds. The sweet corn will be steamed in the pots that are used to make apple butter at the October event, and the steam will come from the steam engines.

Other business

The council passed an ordinance stipulating an agreement with Tionna B. Hunt, who damaged a guardrail on Fairground Road over the 2017 Labor Day Weekend. Hunt has agreed to pay not less than $100 a month until the city is repaid $4,175, the cost of the guardrail repair. She is not being charged interest, but if Hunt misses a payment the city will be entitled to add interest to the remaining balance.

Family Fun Night

The Pinckneyville council invites everyone to come out to the Pinckneyville Fairgrounds on Friday, July 27, for Family Fun Night. Hours are 6-8:30 p.m. Family Fun Night was a joint idea between the Pinckneyville Police, Pinckneyville Fire Department, and the Pinckneyville Ambulance Service. The three entities solicit donations from the city, business, and clubs to make the event a success.
