Du Quoin Education Foundation awards a record 87 scholarships to DHS seniors

DU QUOIN - Fifty-five Du Quoin High School seniors were awarded a combined 87 scholarships at last Friday's Du Quoin Community School District #300 Educational Foundation dinner.

Superintendent Gary Kelly said the 87 scholarships is a record total doled out by the foundation and added up to tens of thousands of dollars. He added that over 600 scholarships have been awarded in all the past 12 years.

"As part of the Foundation Recognition Program this year, we also recognized our past valedictorians from 1960-1979," Kelly said.

They include: Richard Daily ('60), Wayne Haase ('61), Sally Haines ('62), Paul Schobert ('63), Carol Friedman ('64), Michael Krone ('65), Gary Malone and Gregory Roegler ('66), David Bauer and Alan Maclin ('67), Sandra Malone ('68), Linda Gladson ('69), Susan Krone ('70), Nancy Manis ('71), Douglas Bishop ('72), Doug Gates ('73), Debra Heape ('74), Linda Vancil ('75), Brian Gates ('76), Elaine McIntire ('77), Aaron Atkins ('78) and Pamela Gates ('79).

Of that group, Haase, Haines Cook, Maclin, Gladson, Bishop and Heape Denton were able to attend.

Following is a breakdown on the scholarships awarded:

• Egyptian Officials Association - Southern Illinois Coaches Association Scholarships. Two $425 scholarships to Grace Haney, daughter of Sean and Traci Haney and Will Woodside, son of Mark and Lynn Woodside

• Drew Uhles Memorial Scholarship -- Two $1,000 scholarships to Abigel Alvarado, daughter of Larry and Niki Alvarado and Maddie Haggard, daughter of Carrie and Dave Haggard

• Jeff Conner Memorial Scholarship -- $500 scholarship to Ashton Smith, son of Karly Sims, Lonnie Smith, and Derek Sims

• Seth Milam Memorial Scholarship -- $1,000 scholarship to Will Woodside, son of Mark and Lynn Woodside

• Harris Family Christian Foundation Scholarship -- $1,000 scholarship to Delainey File, daughter of Shawn and Shelly File

• Jack Licata Memorial Scholarship -- $1,000 scholarship to Madeline Halstead, daughter of Lindsay and Wayne Halstead

• Harry "Corky" Strong Scholarship -- $500 scholarship to McLain Baker, daughter of Richie Baker and Julie Bird

• Ann Paxton Scholarship -- $500 scholarship to Gabrielle Porter, daughter of Dane and Julie Porter

• Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship -- (1) $1,000 scholarship to Will Woodside, son of Mark and Lynn Woodside

• VFW Auxiliary DuQuoin Post 513 Scholarship -- $500 scholarship to Garrett Morgenstern, son of Doug and Marsha Morgenstern

• Du Quoin Police Scholarships -- Two $500 scholarships, one in memory of Past Chief Jim Booker given to Skye Westerhouse, daughter of Chrystal Davis and one in memory of Past Commissioner Richard Fronek given to Howard Clark, son of Kelly Tripp and Doug Clark

• John and Wanda Rednour Family Scholarship -- $1,000 scholarship to Tyler Swinney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Swinney

• Du Quoin Lions Club Scholarship -- $500 scholarship to Madison Whitley, daughter of James and Cindy Whitley

• William O. Stanhouse Memorial Scholarship -- $1,000 scholarship to Ashton Smith, son of Karly Sims, Lonnie Smith, and Derek Sims

• William A. Mathis Sr. Memorial Scholarships -- Two $1,000 scholarships to Josie Bailey, daughter of Michael and Denice Bailey and Emily Hamburger, daughter of Dennis and Lesley Hamburger

• Preceptor Alpha Eta Memorial Scholarship $500 scholarship to Brooke Ward, daughter of Mark and Bev Ward

• Leon Longshore Family Memorial Scholarships $1,000 scholarship to Delainey File, daughter of Shawn and Shelly File
