After almost five hours of executive session in a special meeting, the Du Quoin District 300 Board of Education voted to extend the contracts of three administrators on Monday.

The board extended the contracts of Du Quoin High School Principal Matt Hickam and Du Quoin Middle School Principal Aaron Hill for a three-year period, and extended the term of Superintendent Gary Kelly until September 1, 2019.

"There's no dollars attached until we figure out what the teachers are," Kelly said. "We'll be negotiating that in the coming months, then we'll determine what the salary amounts are at that time."

Kelly noted the district's two-year contract with the Du Quoin Education Association, which represents the district's teachers, expires this year.

"We've had multiple-year contracts in the past and hopefully, we'll be sitting down with them and start working on that soon," he said.

Kelly, who has previously turned in his intent-to-retire notice, said his extension is to allow him to work with the new superintendent during the transition period.

"We like to make sure we take care of the teacher contracts first," he said. "This is more of a timing issue opposed to the compensation."

The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public.
