A 16-year-old Sparta teenager suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident on Wednesday on State Route 154 on Sparta's west side.
According to a preliminary accident report from the Illinois State Police, Dustin T. Lohman was driving a 1995 Ford Mustang eastbound on Route 154 and was attempting to turn left onto Hillcrest Drive.
Approaching the intersection in the opposite lane was a 2005 Freightliner semi driven by 63-year-old Thomas Presswood of Du Quoin.
Police say Lohman turned into the path of the semi, which struck the Mustang on its passenger side. The impact caused the Mustang to exit the roadway and enter the front yard of a residence in the 700 block of Broadway Street, where it also damaged a fence.
Both the Freightliner and the Mustang received heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. One lane of Route 154 was closed for approximately 30 minutes for crash investigation and cleanup.
Lohman was ticketed for failure to yield and he was transported to Sparta Community Hospital for treatment. The accident was reported at 8:02 a.m.
