State Sen. Dale Fowler was guest speaker for Harrisburg Kiwanis Club, which met Aug. 9 at Ponderosa.

Fowler began the presentation with an update of the Fowler-Bonan Foundation Clothes for Kids golf tournament for youth. He said that it was one of the biggest events the foundation has ever experienced.

Approximately $40,000 was raised to purchase clothes for kids in 19 counties. A new program of feeding children and youth in the summer and/or on weekends when school is in session is being discussed for future implementation.

The senator then focused on his job in Springfield. He is the minority spokesperson for the committee on commerce and economic development, and a member of the committees on agriculture, transportation, higher education and gaming.

After a meeting and tour of Cairo with Dr. Ben Carson, HUD director, Fowler offered a brief explanation of plans for economic development in the city. Renovation and reopening of Rend Lake Resort is another project in the works for this area.
