The driver of a 10-50 drag racing vehicle was airlifted Friday evening from the I57 Dragstrip, apparently conscious and alert, after racing into a tree at high speed.
The Benton Fire Department responded to a request for aid from West City at 7:13 p.m. May 12 after the crash at the dragstrip, located just south of the two cities.
First responders found the vehicle having sustained heavy damage and its driver, who has not been publicly identified, pinned inside of it. Firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle, which appeared to have left the end of the track with a stuck throttle.
Abbott EMS as well as Air-Evac was requested to the scene. The occupant was airlifted from the scene conscious and alert.
