While many area schools are cutting back on fine arts programs, Benton Grade School is celebrating the imagination and creativity of it K-8 students, as evidenced by the 2017 Spring Art Show.
The event, held last Thursday at Benton Middle School, drew a crowd of at least 400 during its hour-long showing.
"I think the show went well, " art teacher Amber Akes said.
Akes said all of her art students were required to pick out artwork for the show.
"My advanced arts students were in charge of the process," she said. Part of these duties included matting all of the artwork, labeling it, and hanging or placing it for show.
There were well over 200 pieces of art attractively arranged and spread throughout the commons area and gymnasium.
Akes also found out that one of her students, Jeraka Sotelo, was chosen as a finalist for the online artist portfolio website Artsonia. Sotelo's countour shoe drawing was selected along with 12 other works of art from around the nation. The voting was conducted online from Wednesday through Saturday of last week.
