It had all the markings of a down-home country hoedown, but fun was just one part of Tuesday evening's "Boots and Bandana Round-Up" at the Benton Civic Center.
The Franklin Hospital Auxiliary hosted the event, an annual fundraising dinner to fund scholarships for students pursuing careers in medicine.
The event featured a "country" menu of barbecue, baked beans, slaw, corn on the cob, and apple cobbler with ice cream. Carolyn Williams did a tribute to her brother, Billy Grammer. Grammer, a Southern Illinois native, was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Ron Head and His Country Friends provided music for the evening, including several tunes that allowed Auxiliary members to showcase their line dancing skills.
The Auxiliary gives out more than $9,000 in scholarships to students in the Franklin Hospital District each year in addition to the Mr. A Scholarship and the Ellen Sawyer Scholarship. It also oversees the Chlodene Williamson Scholarship. A new award has been established this year with a gift from Dr. Saheed and Riswana Khan.
More than 260 people from around the area attended the event.
