ELKVILLE – Elverado Varsity Boys wrapped up a Valentine’s Day gift for their fans when they defeated Agape Christian School Tuesday night, 64-60.

The Falcons battled Agape from the start, staying within a few points until the third quarter, when they pulled ahead and hung onto the lead to win, despite the fact that Agape made 13, three-point shots.

With one more game before the playoffs, Coach Jacob Emling says his boys are in good shape.

“We’re ready for the playoffs,” he said. “And Elverado’s ready for a championship. We want to bring this one home for our fans.”

Aquntez Penn, Sage Sarensen and Zee Johnson, finished the game tied as high-scorers with 15 points each. Joey Dunham scored 13 and Dawson White, 6.

Johnson and Sarensen scored in the final quarter and Dunham made his third three-pointer of the night. Johnson hit some key free throws down the stretch and the Elverado defense kept the Knights from a comeback.

“We just weren’t making those open shots in the first half or even in the third quarter,” said Coach Emling. “But the boys hung on to finish the game strong.”

Sage Sarensen was a demon on defense. Once the team’s top scorer, he said he has adjusted his play this year.

“I’m more of a team player than I was last year,” Sarensen said. “I love playing defense and I love that we’re winning.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-1 in the South Egyptian Conference and to 20-8 overall. Agape falls to 1-6 in the league and 10-12 overall.

The win sets a record for the Falcons.

“Twenty wins, that’s the first time in school history,” said Coach Emling.
