Sears, Inc. will close its Du Quoin Hometown Store at 325 South Washington Street in the coming weeks.

Manager Chris Moffitt said Monday that after the retirement of the former owner, the store went from being a hometown store to being a corporate store.

“They are closing it to use the capital in other stores elsewhere,” Moffitt said.

The Sears hometown store did well years ago under the ownership of Mike Marchetti. Not, so much after Marchetti gave up the franchise and opened his own discount store.

The store has been in the South Washington Street location for the past seven years.

A liquidation sale is being advertised in the Du Quoin Evening Call with discounts up to 70 percent in the coming weeks.

“Most of the store is discounted 10 to 30 percent now,” said Moffitt.

Sears sales no longer apply to the Du Quoin store.

The current going out of business sale runs through December 15 with deeper discounts on everything from appliances to bedding to tools getting progressively larger as the store is sold out.

Under the hometown store program, you buy and own the business with a reasonable amount of capital. You are responsible for the building and location, the utilities, etc. and a share of the local marketing responsibility. Sears then provides you with the inventory, then pays you a commission on what you sell.
