INA – Once again, Rend Lake College is offering a number of training courses for handgun-enthusiasts this fall.

Illinois concealed carry training, basic and advance handgun training and Low Light Engagement handgun training classes are available through December on campus, RLC reports.

RLC’s two-day course prepares people to apply for their Illinois Concealed Carry permit, covering from safety to laws, and everything in between.

On day one, the firearms safety and marksmanship classroom portion of the course will focus on safety, principles of marksmanship, loading and unloading, cleaning, and state and federal laws relating to firearms and force. Firearms and ammunition are not to be brought to the first day of class.

The second day will include interacting with law enforcement, recognizing risk factors and situational awareness, identifying threats, and learning about range rules and procedures. The live fire practice and qualification will also occur on the RLC Shooting Range. Students should bring their firearm with 100 rounds of unopened ammunition for course instructors to inspect.

To qualify, students must complete 30 rounds at 5, 7, and 10 yards with at least 70 percent accuracy. A qualifying shot consists of a shot placed inside the 7 ring of a B-27 target.

Participants who complete RLC’s Concealed Carry training course are eligible to apply for Illinois and Florida Concealed Weapons licenses. A valid FOID card and a driver’s license must be brought to class. Participants must be at least 21 years old. The cost of the training is $150 for in-state residents and $250 for out-of-state residents.

RLC also offers handgun training courses for any level, from the novice to the professional. The Basic Handgun Training class gives an overview of the laws pertaining to civilian use of force, types of handguns, and ammunition. Instructor Jeff Bullard will also teach participants about proper stances, gripping, loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions, rules of the range and firing a handgun. Participants will have the chance to visit the RLC Shooting Range to practice the techniques learned in the classroom. RLC has a few handguns available for use.

The Basic Handgun Training class will meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in the Coal Mine Training Center, Room 107A, on the Ina campus. The class costs $65.

Once participants have taken and passed the basics class, the advanced training course is available to go more in-depth into the laws and civilian use of force. Specific topics will include weak-hand shooting, one-hand shooting, one-hand reloading, shooting on the move and range rules. The class will use the RLC Shooting Range to practice these techniques.

The Advanced Handgun Training class will meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Coal Mine Training Center, Room 107A, on the Ina campus. The class costs $65.

After mastering the advanced class, people can learn to shoot in a low light setting in Low Light Engagement Handgun Training. The class will learn the importance of illumination tools and their use, including improper uses, principles of lighting, mindset for low light engagement and range rules. The class will practice with these techniques on the RLC Shooting Range.

The Low-Light Engagement Handgun Training class will meet from 2 – 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in the Coal Mine Training Center, Room 107A, on the Ina campus. The class costs $65.

Participants in any of the handgun training courses should bring their own ear and eye protection, handgun, 150 rounds of ammunition, and valid FOID card. Attendees must be at least 18 years old, and old clothing is recommended. Those who have completed the course may re-take the range portion during a scheduled class for a reduced fee.
