4-H sign language workshop is Saturday
Saline County 4-H youth are invited to attend a sign Language Workshop, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, at the White County Extension Office in Carmi.
Come and learn basic sign language skills from teacher Karen Worley. Skills learned at this Unit 24 workshop can be incorporated into lessons from the Diversity & Cultural Awareness project. Call Nancy at (618) 252-8391 for more information.
Saline County 4-H Achievement Night
Saline County 4-H will hold our annual Achievement Night program at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25 at the Saline County Fairgrounds Livestock Building.
We look forward to seeing all 4-H members, volunteers, and families at the Fairgrounds to receive awards and recognize the accomplishments of our youth. In addition to handing out the trophies and plaques for the 2021 summer 4-H show ribbon winners, we will be honoring retiring 4-H members, 10-year members, 1st year members, Cloverbuds, and adult volunteers.
All 4-H Federation officers should arrive by 4 p.m. to help decorate and to get prepared to speak and hand out awards. Our theme is "Find Your Spark in 4-H!"
We have planned an additional set up date of 7 p.m. on Oct. 21, to put the tables and chairs, the stage area, backdrop, etc., in place. 4-H members and volunteers are encouraged to come out to help if possible.
4-H Scarecrow Challenge, Unit 24
It's fall! In our area, that means farmers are harvesting, the weather is cooler, and campfire season is here. Mums and pumpkins are making their appearances along with Scarecrows!
Please join Unit 24 4-H (Saline, Gallatin, Pope-Hardin, Hamilton and White counties) for a 4-H Scarecrow Challenge. Make a scarecrow out of items around the house -- no buying anything. Just make a good old-fashioned scarecrow wearing a 4-H Clover!
Display your scarecrow, take a picture, and send it to your 4-H Extension Program Coordinator by Nov. 1. Photos will be shared on social media. A favorite scarecrow will be selected from each county, and one scarecrow will be selected as an overall favorite from Unit 24.
Your scarecrow may be seated, standing, or hanging. Hint ... wire hangers, buckets, and even flowerpots are very useful in making a scarecrow. A fake pumpkin, a stuffed pillowcase, or a burlap sack would make a great head. Grocery bags, newspapers, old pillows, and even pool noodles can be used for stuffing or to keep arms and legs straight. Get creative -- your scarecrow can wear a hat, shoes, overalls, pants and shirt or a dress.
Remember, the 4-H Clover must be displayed prominently on the scarecrow. We can't wait to see what you create. Saline County 4-H members, submit your photos to Nancy at nlambert@illinois.edu by Nov. 1.
