HARRISBURG -- State Sen. Dale Fowler wanted to bring Valentine's Day joy to those living at nursing homes and assisted living centers, but said he never imagined the results of his project.

In January, Fowler asked schools as well as volunteers throughout his 59th State Senate District to create Valentine's Day greeting cards to be distributed to seniors throughout the region.

On Friday, Fowler said he and his assistants delivered nearly 10,000 cards to 47 nursing homes and assisted living centers.

"I'm just stunned. I'm really overwhelmed," an enthusiastic and emotional Fowler said in his office Friday morning. "This is a true testament to the people of southern Illinois and how this region stands up and looks out for one another.

At the same time, local florist Wayman Winters, owner of Pickford's Flowers and Gifts in Harrisburg, stopped by with his wife, Cyndi.

Wayman and Cyndi had stopped by to deliver flowers, free of charge, for residents of senior facilities across Saline County. Fowler praised them for their generosity.

"It's really something for a flower shop to take the time right before Valentine's Day to do this," Fowler said.

"We just want to spread a message of love for one another," Wayman Winters said.

Fowler said he had hoped the Valentine's Day event would be a popular one, but he had no idea that there would be an outpouring of support.

"So many schoolchildren and so many volunteers poured their hearts and souls into this, and our seniors throughout the region are going to know people care about them. Especially after this long time that they've been isolated from family and friends, it's important that they know people still care," Fowler said.
