In the 56 short stories and four novellas Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about the exploits of Sherlock Holmes, nowhere does he state when Holmes was born. By poring over the clues left in the writings, however, researchers have concluded that the renowned consulting detective's birthday was Jan. 6, 1854.

Here in Chester, we have a statue that simultaneously honors both Holmes and Elzie Segar, the creator of Popeye (and a devoted Holmes reader). The Sherlock/Segar statue proudly stands on a lot adjacent to Mike McClure's home on Swanwick Street.
