The NubAbility Athletics Foundation will host a golf scramble on Aug. 16 at Red Hawk Golf and Grille in Tamaroa, raising money to send limb-different children to sports camps this summer.

Since 2012, the Foundation has held a big sports camp in Du Quoin each July, bringing around 200 limb-different children from 49 states and 11 nations to the area. NubAbility helps limb-different children gain courage and confidence by teaching them to succeed in mainstream sports.

The COVID-19 crisis prevented such a big gathering in 2020.

"Unfortunately, given current conditions we were not able to do an event of that size this year," said Sam Kuhnert, NubAbility founder and executive director in a news release.

"However, in order to keep serving the kids who count on us, we have put together a series of 10 regional clinics across the country -- starting with a golf clinic at Red Hawk the day before the scramble.

"Funds from the scramble will help make these events possible," he added.

The scramble will begin at noon with lunch and a silent auction, followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $75 per person or $300 for a foursome, which includes greens fees, golf carts and lunch. Children who participate in the golf clinic the day before will be able to play in the scramble for free.

Hole-in-one prizes for the scramble include a $20,000 vacation at a Sandals or Beaches resort from 24 Karat Travel and a 2020 Iron 883 Sportster motorcycle from Black Diamond Harley Davidson.

"We truly appreciate the support of the people and businesses of southern Illinois," Kuhnert said. "Year after year, your generosity makes an amazing difference in these children's lives."

One-day golf clinic
The #DontNeed2 golf clinic on Aug. 15 at Red Hawk Golf and Grille in Tamaroa is open to children ages 4 to 17, with congenital or traumatic loss of one or more limbs -- and who wish to improve their golf skills and meet other limb-different children and adults.

"For many kids, Nub Camp is the only time they spend around other limb-different children and coaches -- an experience that is invaluable when it comes to building self-esteem," Kuhnert said.

Sponsors of the golf clinic include the Freedom Foundation, Heartland Coca-Cola and Marion Walmart store #216. Casey's General Stores, Heartland Coca-Cola, and Red Hawk Golf and Grille have made in-kind donations to the event.
