ELDORADO -- As the Eldorado Garden Study club ramps up its activities in anticipation of the coming gardening season, the group wants to remind and encourage area gardeners to include plants that provide food and habitat for pollinators in their gardens and yards.
The population of pollinators, which is critical to our food supply, is seeing declining numbers. Bees and butterflies are especially drawn to plants that are native to our local area, and they particularly love wildflowers that are pollen and nectar-rich.
Growing milkweed is important because it is the host plant for the monarch butterfly. So, as we all look forward to spring and getting outside to enjoy warmer days, keep in mind those pollinators who need the beautiful flowers you plant to survive.
The club's annual truckload plant sale under the direction of committee chairperson Carol Hines should have a variety of pollinator plants available for sale on May 22 at the First Christian Church parking lot in Eldorado.
The Eldorado Garden Study Club is affiliated with and supports the projects, goals and objectives of the National Garden Clubs and the Garden Clubs of Illinois.
