The Daniel Chapman Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met earlier this month at First Christian Church in Anna.

The call to order was provided by Regent Juanita Broyles. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ruth Brown. The American's Creed was given by Martha Schwegman. The Preamble to the Constitution was read by Alice Brooks.

Doda Starkey introduced the guest speaker, her husband, Forrest "Skip" Starkey, who has spent more than 50 years teaching and studying forestry. Now retired, he continues to practice ecology on their Johnson County farm.

The national defense report was provided by Alice Thororopoulos on the Blue Star and Gold Star Flags. She also told of the DAR recognition that she presented at the ROTC Awards Day, conducted recently at SIU. The recipient of the pin was Emma Alexander, a junior ROTC member, of Biggsville.

Reports from officers were heard, including the April minutes by Doda Starkey, and the financial report by Irene Webb, in the absence of treasurer Sandy Boaz, and the registrar's report by Marilyn Meisenheimer.

Jeanne Boglino reported that she donated about 50 books to the "Nearly New" shop of Golconda from the DAR book sale program, which has been discontinued. The chaplain's report was given by Cara Webb, in the absence of Bonnie Hogue.

Reports of committees were heard, including the following: American Indian Minute, on the Latoka and Sioux tribes, was read by Dixie Terry, in the absence of Sandy Boles. Conservation co-chairmen Virginia Street and Martha Schwegman have planted a butterfly pollination garden at Cache River Wetlands Center, one of 12 at that location.

Virginia Street reported that the Daniel Chapman Chapter ad will be seen in the May-June issue of the DAR magazine. A report on the schools, supported by the DAR, was given by Linda Minnis, who has sent the Box Tops for Education collected by chapter members. The collection of the grocery box tops will be continued.

Elizabeth James provided an American Flag Minute, on American vintage flags. For Women's Issues, Irene Webb provided "Words of Wisdom by Andy Rooney." The final meeting of the chapter will be on June 12 at the Historical Society Museum in Golconda, when new officers will be installed.

Hostesses for the May meeting were Ruth Brown, Elizabeth James, Alice Brooks and Cara Webb, who served a barbecue lunch, following the business session. Those attending were Loudene Lemme, Doda Starkey and Irene Webb, all of Vienna; Cara Webb of Tunnel Hill; Juanita Broyles, Dixie Terry and Ruth Brown, all of Goreville; Linda Minnis of Marion; Jeanne Boglino and Alice Thodoropolous, both of Golconda; Alice Brooks of Stonefort; Virginia Street of Simpson; Marilyn Meisenheimer and Lillian Milam, both of Jonesboro; Martha Schwegman of Metropolis; Elizabeth Jame and Julia Mowery, both of Buncombe; and guest speaker Skip Starkey of Vienna.
