The Illinois Capital Development Board has now become involved in a fairly pricey repair inside the $13 million Southern Illinois Center on the south side of the fairgrounds.
About two weeks ago a 30-foot section of heavy steel ventilation ductwork fell 90 feet from the ceiling of the center and hit the concrete floor just inside the doors of the dirt-floor arena.   No one was in the building at the time. The company that did the work is out  of business.  Apparently a set of hangers failed. Illinois State Fair personnel are expected in Du Quoin on Wednesday to view the damage. The Illinois Capital Development Board is also assessing the cost of the repair. In the meantime, the fair has moved an Oct. 17 demolition derby from the SI Center to the half-mile track and hope to make the repairs before the National Federation of Bull Riding finals on Nov. 6 & 7.
