Debit Card Scam Targets '318' Cell Phones

updated: 2/8/2013 10:37 AM

A bank debit card scam in Southern Illinois is apparently targeting cell phones with a wireless "prefix" of "318."
Police confirm that cell phone owners will get an automated call saying that their debit card has been compromised. You are then asked to "Press 1" which takes you to another automated call which claims to need your account number and your PIN security number to fix a security problem with your bank. Banks don't operate that way. Banks have a special, personal protocol with customers to fix problems. If you provided secure information, call your bank and advise them.
