Two to vie for Carbondale mayor in April
Calling himself part of "a new generation of politicians," the seemingly omnipresent Carbondale native Nathan Colombo now will challenge the city's mayor for his seat in next spring's election. Colombo, 29, announced Monday that he will run for mayor in the April 2, 2019, municipal election, now having emerged as the sole challenger to Mayor John "Mike" Henry. Henry announced earlier this fall that he will seek a second term.

Carbondale Chamber seeking nominees for annual awards
The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce again will recognize excellence with a series of annual awards during its 102nd-annual banquet Feb. 15, 2019. Nominations for these awards are accepted from Chamber members and the community. Nominations are due by noon Wednesday Dec. 17.

CCHS boys dominate Alton Tournament
The Terriers boys basketball team will not be the tallest, best-shooting or flashiest offensive juggernaut his season, but they sure can play defense. The Terriers now have run off with four wins in a row. Defense, discipline and a lack of discipline by the host Alton Redbirds were all factors in the Terriers garnering four wins and technically winning the round-robin Alton Tournament last week.
