Benton senior Hunter Rone was a force on the football field for the Rangers this season. He is moving his game to Greenville College to play football next season, accepting an offer from the D-III school.
Rone couldn’t be happier to move to the next level.
“It’s definitely been a goal since I was a little kid to play football at the next level,” he said.
More than football, Rone was impressed with the message Greenville sends to its prospective athletes.
“I liked their message,” he said. “They are preparing you more for life. They aren’t just worried about you as a football player, they are worried about you as a man.”
Rone’s high school coach Jeremy Clodfelder feels that Rone made a great choice.
“I think it is a great opportunity for him, they put together a nice package,” Clodfelder said.
It appears Rone was recruited at the linebacker spot.
“I assume they will play him at linebacker and play him inside,” said Clodfelder said. “He will be a plugger and a filler — that is the conversations we had.”
Ordell Walker is the coach at Greenville College.
“They came and visited us, got some game film and the process went on from there,” Clodeflder said.
Rone knows that hard work will be the key to his success at Greenville.
“I think I will be a hard-nosed football player for them,” said Rone. “No matter what, I am going to work hard every day. I am going to show up and be ready to work in practice and games. Whatever they need me for, I am going to work for.”
Clodfelder said Walker is definitely getting a hard worker.
“He has an unbelievable work-ethic and he is great kid in the weight room,” said Clodfelder. “He will fit in fine there. He does everything you ask him to do. When you get to college it kind of becomes a business and it is part of your job to play football.
“I think he has all the intangibles to be successful,” he added. “It comes down to hard work and he is willing to do that.”
Greenville was 7-3 last season, winning its final six games. It plays in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in football and is a member of the National Christian College Athletics Association.
Rone is the son of Valerie and Dude Rone of Benton. Rone plans on majoring in nursing.
